Feels like a dumb question, but why are there two hood strut pins?

Since I bought this car a few months ago, this question keeps coming up in my head every time I see it. And I feel dumb for asking it of the hive-mind.

But... seriously, why are there two sets of pins?

The second one allows you to have the bonnet lifted up a bit more for servicing etc.

Oh, ok. Can the hood be closed while they are in the higher position or would that damage something? I can be absent minded, accidentally shut the hood with one of the wipers up this past weekend actually, so if that can be a problem I just won't use them. I know me too well.
